MoMoPay: Your Key to Kigali’s Cashless Lifestyle
MoMoPay is the merchant payment service of MTN Mobile Money (MoMo), and in Rwanda, it is far more than just a digital wallet—it is a cultural staple. With over half of all transactions in the country happening via mobile money, it is the primary way to pay for everything from your monthly utilities to your afternoon brochette. For you, this means you can leave your heavy wallet at home and handle almost any transaction using just your phone, even without an internet connection.
How It Works in Your Daily Life
In Kigali, paying with MoMo is the standard. You will see 5- or 6-digit Merchant Codes displayed on small yellow stickers at supermarkets like Simba or Sawa City, on the dashboards of Moto-taxis, and at the entrances of local stores in Nyamirambo.
To pay, simply dial the USSD code *182*8*1#, enter the merchant code, and the amount in Rwandan Francs (RWF).
If a merchant doesn’t have a code, you can also “Pay by Number” by dialing *182*1*1# and entering their mobile phone number. You can also use the MTN MoMo App to scan QR codes for a faster experience. Beyond shopping, this system allows you to pay for government services via Irembo, settle water bills with WASAC, and buy electricity units from REG at any hour of the day. Before you can pay for that coffee or moto-taxi, you need to “Cash In” or deposit Rwandan Francs (RWF) into your digital wallet. While you can link some Rwandan bank accounts to your MoMo, the most common way to load money is through the vast network of MoMo Agents.

1. Approach the agent and tell them you want to deposit money.
2. Give them the physical cash and provide your phone number.
3. The agent will initiate the transfer, and you will receive a confirmation SMS immediately. There is no fee for depositing money.
It is important to note that while depositing is free, withdrawing cash (Cashing Out) at an agent will incur a small tiered fee based on the amount. For newcomers, keeping your money in the digital “MoMo” ecosystem and paying via merchant codes is the most cost-effective way to manage your finances.

- Tip 2: When paying a Moto-taxi driver, always ask if they have a “code” (MoMoPay). Paying to a merchant code is free for you, whereas sending money to a personal phone number usually incurs a small transaction fee.
